Superfoods for your Skin

With such a heavy emphasis on self-care recently, I wanted to write a piece on skin care. With busy lives, sometimes long nights with the children, we will often try many different products to hide those tired eyes.

So how do we choose which skincare brand to use?

I’m sharing some of my favourite skincare brands with you. many skincare products are getting smarter with charcoal and clay based masks are helping us to flush out toxins to leave our skin feeling new again. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of amazing budget face creams on the market, but in a revolution of wellness and self-care, some of us are looking for smart skincare products that can give us glowing, youthful skin.

Scientists have discovered that on top of the skin’s surface, there’s a layer of natural bacteria called the microbiome. Pollution, stress and our over-clean lifestyles can damage this healthy eco-system and cause an imbalance of bacteria, which can trigger skin disorders. It’s the bad bacteria that can cause flare ups of spots and acne.

So how do we conquer it?

Well, in the same way we think about good and bad bacteria in our gut – we should think the same way about our skin. Probiotics and nutrients feed good bacteria and that’s exactly what we need.

Many skincare counters in large retailers will be able to do an assessment of your skin to advise what skincare range is best suited for your skin type. I have have slightly dehydrated skin, so moisture rich creams are perfect for me (a good reminder to myself to drink more water). Good hydration supports your skins natural barrier function to keep it supple. I am no beauty expert, but I recommend a range of hydration-rich formulations which are ideal for hydration hungry skin types. Here are some examples:

For daytime creams, I love Clarins Extra-Firming Day Cream SPF 15 which now includes extracts from the kangaroo-paw flower (yes, you heard that right), to help skin to regenerate. You could also try the Elemis superfood day cream or another of my absolute favourites is Kiehl’s super multi-corrective cream, which is perfect for erasing any wine-filled nights out with the girls.

For overnight treatments at home before brushing up on your beauty sleep, try the Murad Retinol Youth Renewal serum which increases cell turnover whilst optimising the skin’s long term ability to process the healing benefits of retinol. Another favourite is Decleor’s calming and restorive Aromessence Neroli Amara Night Balm. Perfectly soothing with detoxing chamomile, sandalwood and neroli.

So there you have it. Proof that probiotics for your face could hold some of the answers to dry, sensitive skin aswell as waving goodbye to those unwanted acne flare ups.
