Family Food at CAU Restaurants
Is it just me or is anyone else getting a little bored of pizza and pasta restaurants? I know they are great but sometimes if feels good to have a change.
To try something new, we went along to CAU restaurant in Tunbridge Wells, which offers Buenos Aires cuisine. A explosion of yummy comfort food inspired by Italy, Spain and Argentina for the whole family. From the mouth-watering steaks, burgers and tacos, each dish is served up with its own distinctive Argentinian twist.
Did you know that CAU is part of Gaucho? No, neither did I. The team behind Argentinean restaurant chain Gaucho launched a new dining concept, which is more casual and accessible restaurant with the same Buenos Aires fun vibe. We all know that the high street is tough for restaurants and I love how CAU want to offer something quirky and different from the usual pizza and pasta dishes.
There are some twenty two CAU restaurants dotted around the United Kingdom, but who knew CAU was so great for family? Until we were invited to come and experience it for ourselves, we had never considered coming here with our two children aged six and eight respectively.
On arrival, the music was vibrant and the decor was fun. The restaurant was very clean and I noticed some highchairs in the corner, so they are clearly geared up for families.
We were welcomed by friendly staff and received our drinks very quickly. The menu is great - steaks, burgers, salads and a mixture of Mexican tapas. Within five minutes or so, they brought out crayons, a fun word search and colouring for kids for the table without us needing to ask. Straight away, the kids were occupied whilst we studied the delicious menu. We were off to a good start!
There was a kids menu, which again, I hadn't expected. It is probably no surprise that both our children choose tomato pasta (again!) but...my daughter said that when we come back, she would like to try the tacos. I was so pleased that she wanted to try something new and extend her palate with different tastes!
And perhaps, that's the point. It is about trying something new that works for you and the family. For the adults, we opted for the set menu. We chose the coriander chicken coxinhas to start (thats croquettes to you and me!) which were so good to children wanted some too, so we had to order another portion! For mains, my husband opted for a 250g steak and I went for the classic burger. All of which was washed down with an Aperol Spritz. The perfect summer drink!
After dinner, all four of us shared a plate of churros (Doughnuts Argentine-style, lightly dusted with cinnamon sugar). Quite honestly, it was a delicious meal and we all left the restaurant completely satisfied. After watching the Fifa World Cup earlier that afternoon and then coming out for an early dinner, this really rounded off a brilliant day!
In summary, as a family, we do eat out a lot and I don't know what I was expecting, but CAU exceeded our expectations completely. They also cater for customers with food preferences, allergies and intolerances. This is the perfect reason why restaurants should collaborate with parenting bloggers, so we can give an honest review of the experience (which I always do!). On a personal note, I feel like I am falling a little out of love with pizza express at the moment. I think CAU restaurants could be our new 'to-go' favourite. Delicious Kids meals with a twist for only £6.50? Yes please! Pass the menu...
