School Routines with Smiggle

For most of us we are officially back to school with a bang! Only a few weeks in and I imagine, if you are like us, we are all shattered already! Getting back into bedtime and homework routines are only just starting to find their stride.

If the summer heatwave wasn’t the most exciting thing that happened to you, then surely it may have been trumped by the stationary shop. My daughter and I had an actual ‘stationary shop’ day which was as exciting for her as it was for me! We all remember our stationery from school: the smelly gel pens, the pencil cases, novelty rubbers and bendy rulers, notebooks covered with wrapping paper and novelty pencil toppers. Need I go on?

For many of us, stationery is a source of nostalgia for some and bright, engaging stationery could be a great way to get the children engaged with back to school. Even more so, the right stationery for a young child can mean the difference between wanting to learn and frustration at the first hurdle. I’m sharing my top tips for getting the most out of your back to school routine in collaboration with Smiggle.

1. Plan your Mornings

I think most parents would agree that getting the kids up and out in the morning can be tricky. Sometimes the kids wake up raring to go and other days they wake up cranky and tired. Having a routine is always a good idea, but if you are like me, I recommend setting the alarm fifteen minutes before I need to get up to give myself more time.

If you are up earlier and already had a cup of tea/coffee, they are more likely to follow your lead. Avoid iPads and TV in the morning if you can as I always find time seems to slip away and suddenly, we are on the back foot running out the door!

2. A Dose of Daily Exercise

There is a good chance the children have been running around at playtime at school which is great. Even a small amount of exercise every day (30 minutes or more) can keep your child fit and healthy, plus they are more likely to get a good’s night’s sleep.

According to a report in Tele Telegraph, children who took part in the more vigorous sort of exercise fell asleep faster but those with sedentary lifestyles took longer to fall asleep. Children who fell asleep faster also tended to sleep for longer, raising the possibility of this being "a marker for good sleepers." The researchers said: "our study emphasises the importance of physical activity for children, not only for fitness, cardiovascular health and weight control, but also for sleep."

The best time is just after school, when it’s still light and you can take them to the playground or let them loose in the garden. Then it’s time for homework, dinner, bath and bed. Done!

3. Set Routines

Having a family planner on view so every family member knows the family routine on what happens and when. This extends to getting the right clothing or PE gear out the night before so there are no frantic searches for the missing PE trainer or school coat. Goodness knows, I’ve had many of those! Children often respond well to a routine so you’ll thank yourself when they adapt to doing the right things at the right time each day. Have breakfast and dinner at set times, bedtime must be absolutely set in stone and homework should have appointed times too. Giving your kids too much choice over their own routine just leads to their spending too long on games or play and not enough for homework and helping with chores.
