Wallpaper is making a Huge Comeback and Here’s Why
It is fair to say that wallpaper is making huge comeback. I might even be a bit late out the gate on this one. Some days I feel like the only blogger on the planet who does not have wallpaper in their home. Shame on me!
When you think about wallpaper, it may transport you back to memories of seventies style wallpaper in your nan's house, but, this decorating taboo has returned to fashion. This is all thanks to ultra-stylish prints, dimensional fabrics, and new materials which make it easy to install and, yes, to remove. Offering more drama than paint, it is a fun way to transform a room and reflect your personal style without breaking the bank.
So where has the new-found love for wallpaper come from? Is it because we became so obsessed with white walls and elephant’s breath in every room from Farrow and Ball? Action is needed and many of us have been considering bringing an injection of colour back into our homes. Is it the spike in style bloggers and Instagram that is tempting us along to make our decisions? Or is it just because we want to make our homes feel more special?
I often thought that wallpaper was “risky”. What if I change my mind in twelve months and want a different design and was it worth the cost? But, what if, we took a risk, went for a bold design and loved it? Wow, when it works, boy does it look good!
Indeed, today’s popular papers are vastly different from the old school. The prints are dramatically oversize and fantastically whimsical, with characters that feel pulled from a storybook and patterns right from the runway. The colours are richer. The fabrics are textured and sometimes three-dimensional. And the images have a lifelike sharpness thanks to advances in digital printing.
I have been working with Murals Wallpapers and being a complete wallpaper novice, when they approached me about helping me come up with a fresh idea for some of our rooms in our home. I will admit, I was nervous. Wallpaper felt like a big commitment! And then the vast amount of designs, I ended up going down a rabbit hole of on-trend and remarkable wallpaper designs, which I then envisaged in every single room of the house.
Children's Rooms - multiple-use spaces
The world of kids' wallpapers is huge and colourful, but unlike with toys, there are no age recommendations that would help parents decide which types to choose. I wanted to choose a wallpaper that would grow with our daughter, so she didn’t feel it was child-like by the time she was ten. I couldn’t bear the idea of switching the wallpaper every year, so we needed to agree on a design which had longevity. A pattern that feels fun, bright and suits her personality, creating a perfect place for sleep, study and play. We decided to do a feature wall which has worked out really well for the space. After that, I realised there were more rooms to complete, so we did two further rooms. Here are some top tips for planning wallpaper in children’s rooms.
Interesting patterned wallpapers can also be placed at the head of the bed. Pastel or dark/warm wallpaper colours, delicate patterns or wallpapers in just one hue are a better choice for the relaxation areas, whilst bright, stimulating colours and patterns are a good backdrop for play and study areas.
As children go through the different year groups at school, they discover new interests along with changing their preferences in terms of colours, patterns and designs. To avoid having to newly design the entire room each time, a feature wall with a pattern or motif wallpaper can be a great solution, especially as it is easier to change it again and again.
It is of course an option to use patterned wallpaper on all four walls, especially if it is a geometric or floral pattern in light shades or pleasantly contrasting colours. Star wallpapers, polka dot wallpapers or striped wallpapers are all perfectly suitable, too. Striped patterns and polka dots can be combined with each other or with a pattern motif of the child's preference.
Working with Murals Wallpapers was so easy and their wallpapers are all custom made for every wall, using the best quality paper. To guarantee the highest quality standards, everything they create comes from their HQ in Liverpool.
So, if you are thinking of changing some of the rooms in your home with wallpaper, then maybe start just like I did and dip your toe in the water with one room at a time. The only problem you’ll ever have is considering what amazing design to choose…
For transparency, Murals Wallpaper gifted us one set of wallpaper for a bedroom and we loved the result so much, we wallpapered a further two rooms at our own cost.
